Plant-derived Vitamin D3, without the lanolin compromise

Lichen is the only non-animal source of cholecalciferol, making this the cleanest commercially available D3 for vegan and plant-based ranges.

A vegan, plant-derived Vitamin D3 from organically cultivated Cladonia rangiferina lichen (BI076). At 180 mg/100g, just 0.0004 g per portion delivers a "Source of" claim, one of the smallest inclusion rates in the BIOVIT portfolio.

Organic certified, GB and EU compliant, and a direct one-to-one replacement for sheep's wool-derived D3 and synthetic cholecalciferol across supplements, gummies, fortified drinks, and plant-based foods.

Specified by leading UK manufacturers, with samples dispatched within a week and reformulation support included.

Frequently asked questions

Buyer questions on specifying lichen-derived Vitamin D3, covering vegan suitability, the D2 vs D3 comparison, bioavailability, and EFSA claim coverage.

How does lichen-derived Vitamin D3 compare on bioavailability to synthetic and sheep's wool D3?

Vitamin D was one of eight micronutrients measured in BIOVIT's 30-day human intervention trial at Swansea University (61 volunteers, UKRI-funded, led by Prof Richard Bracken). The trial confirmed equivalent bioavailability between the natural and synthetic groups across the nutrients measured, supporting the position that lichen-derived D3 performs in line with its synthetic and lanolin-derived counterparts.

Is lichen-derived D3 fully vegan?

Yes. Lichen is one of the only non-animal sources of cholecalciferol, making this the cleanest plant-based D3 commercially available. Suitable for vegan, vegetarian, and plant-based products without the sheep's wool (lanolin) derivation that disqualifies most other D3 ingredients.

What's the difference between Vitamin D2 and D3

D2 (ergocalciferol) is shiitake-derived and fully vegan. D3 (cholecalciferol) is lichen-derived and also vegan. Research indicates D3 is more effective at raising and sustaining serum 25(OH)D levels, which is why D3 is generally the preferred form for supplementation.

What does the ingredient declaration look like on pack?

"Organic lichen extract." A simple, recognisable plant declaration that reads far cleaner than "cholecalciferol" or "Vitamin D3 (from lanolin)" on a label, particularly for vegan-positioned ranges.

What's the typical inclusion rate?

0.0004 g per portion for a "Source of" claim, 0.0008 g for "High in". Among the smallest inclusion rates in the portfolio, meaning negligible cost impact and no effect on taste, texture, or formulation. For a precise cost figure in your formulation, get in touch with the team.

What are sample and commercial lead times?

Samples and commercial orders are dispatched within around a week of order confirmation, with full technical documentation included. The MOQ is 1 kg on standard powder format. Bespoke formats and pack sizes available on request.

Can BIOVIT support reformulation from synthetic or lanolin-derived D3?

Yes. Every wholesale order comes with full reformulation support from BIOVIT's Head of Nutrition, Eiméar Sutton RNutr MSc. That includes equivalence mapping against your incumbent D3, inclusion-rate modelling, and on-pack claim wording aligned to GB and EU regulation, at no extra cost.

What EFSA-approved health claims apply to Vitamin D3?

Vitamin D3 contributes to the following EU-authorised health claims under EFSA Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006:

Normal function of the immune system
Maintenance of normal bones
Maintenance of normal teeth
Normal absorption and utilisation of calcium and phosphorus
Maintenance of normal muscle function
Maintenance of normal blood calcium levels
Has a role in the process of cell division
Normal growth and development of bone in children
Normal function of the immune system in children

Calcium and vitamin D help to reduce the loss of bone mineral in post-menopausal women. Low bone mineral density is a risk factor for osteoporotic bone fractures (EU only)

Vitamin D helps to reduce the risk of falling associated with postural instability and muscle weakness. Falling is a risk factor for bone fractures among men and women 60 years of age and older (EU only)

Reformulation support is included

Every BIOVIT wholesale order comes with full technical reformulation support at no extra cost, giving your NPD and technical teams direct access to a qualified nutritionist from brief to production.

Eiméar Sutton (RNutr MSc), our Head of Nutrition, leads the technical work on every account: equivalence mapping against your incumbent synthetic, inclusion-rate modelling, on-pack claim wording aligned to GB and EU regulation, and the small details that decide whether a synthetic-to-natural switch lands cleanly on the production line.

The result: shorter development cycles, fewer reformulation rounds, and a finished product your commercial team can stand behind.
