A commendation for circular micronutrient recovery
BIOVIT's Circular Micronutrient Recovery project has been commended by Future of Food, recognising its work turning Welsh food and drink waste streams into natural, plant-derived micronutrient ingredients.
What is Circular Micronutrient Recovery?
Circular Micronutrient Recovery is funded by the Welsh Government's SMART Flexible Innovation Fund and delivered with Swansea University. The project recovers Iodine, Copper, Iron, and Selenium from Welsh waste streams - seaweed and kelp, spent coffee grounds, and rapeseed cake - sourced through feedstock partners PlantSea, Welsh Coffee Co, Mountain Produce, and Crown Estate.
The academic lead is Professor Christopher Wright, whose work focuses on the circularity potential of these underused Welsh by-product streams.
Why this matters
Alongside BIOVIT's Circular Vitamin C project, Circular Micronutrient Recovery extends BIOVIT's circular economy work beyond apple pomace to a wider range of Welsh feedstocks - supporting a domestic, sustainable supply of natural micronutrients and reinforcing BIOVIT's Better Food For All mission.
